► (1887-1985) Pintor lituano. Su pintura, fantástica y colorista, es de estilo expresionista, pero influida por el surrealismo. Destaca su visión inocente del mundo en el simbolismo de sus obras: Sueño de una noche de verano y La noche verde, entre otras.

Pintor, grabador y diseñador bielorruso. Luego de estudiar en San Petersburgo, se mudó a París en 1910. Durante los siguientes cuatro años, se mezcló con la vanguardia y realizó lo que suele considerarse su mejor obra, en el estilo que exploraría por los siguientes 60 años. La figura principal de sus obras fantásticas suele ser el pintor mismo. Los recuerdos de la vida judía, el folclore de Bielorrusia, y los temas bíblicos son sus principales fuentes de imaginería. Los elementos figurativos y frecuentemente extravagantes de sus obras aparecen a menudo al revés, y se distribuyen sobre la tela de modo arbitrario. En la década de 1920 inició su carrera de grabador, realizando cientos de aguafuertes para ediciones especiales de libros. En 1941, partió a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde diseñó escenografías y trajes para el ballet El pájaro de fuego de Igor Stravinski. Después realizó vitrales y murales para edificios públicos en Jerusalén, París y EE.UU.
